SEO or PPC | Choose Your Weapon

When it comes to boosting traffic to your website, you have two basic options:

  • Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising
  • Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

First of all let’s start with what both of them mean.

PPC

Well PPC (Pay Per Click) is the process of making your website visible at the top of the search engine in the sponsored listing (adverts), these can be seen at the very top of the page and also on the right hand side.

SEO

SEO is a similar process to PPC but instead of being in the sponsored listings of a search engine you appear in the natural (organic) search results.

Below is a diagram of where they both show on a search engine:

PPC and SEO

How they differ

The first thing that you will notice that is different about SEO and PPC is that one is paid for and the other is not; this is the main difference. Another one of the differences is that with PPC it is quick and easy to get yourself to the top of the search engine where as with SEO it is not. There is no guaranteed time scale with SEO it takes time.

Which is the best?

So now we are going to look at which is the best to use for your business.

When looking into which is the best for a business then it totally depends on which you would prefer, if your a small business looking for quick results then PPC is the one for you, it’s quick and easy for you to get your self at the top of the page where people will see you for your desired keyword/phrase.

Where as with SEO if you are a big business SEO is important for building your brand, organic rankings can provide you with more coverage than PPC. You can gain Page One Domination and own that first page for your brand. PPC does not give you the kind of dominance like SEO does.

Which is more compatible with social media?

With social media becoming bigger and bigger I thought I would have a look at which works better with it, I believe SEO and Social Media were made for each other. You write a new blog post (like this one) on your site and you naturally promote it socially; I know I will be doing. You create a social profile; you naturally include a link to your site. It’s a natural connection.
